Arthritis affects more than 40 million people and can range from the occasional twinge in a finger to incapacitating whole-body pain. We do not understand why some people seem immune from joint pain even into their 90’s, while others can be so badly crippled at half that age they can barely drag their bones out of bed in the morning.

We don’t have anything remotely resembling a cure for arthritis, though there are dozens of prescription and over the counter products that may temporarily relieve inflammation and ease pain. They all have the potential to cause side effects, however. It is estimated that 100,000 people are hospitalized each year because of adverse reactions to NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

They can cause indigestions, constipation, diarrhea, bleeding ulcer, kidney damage, skin rash, ringing in the ears, fluid retention, drowsiness, and confusion. And pain relievers such as Advil, Aleve, Clinoril, Indocin, Lodine, Motrin, and Relafen can interact with a great many other medications in potentially dangerous ways. Newer medications such as Celebrex and Vioxx are less likely to cause stomach damage but may still interact with other drugs.

Home remedies, herbal therapies, and nutritional supplements all offer reasonable options for folks who are looking for some relief from arthritis pain. Not every remedy will work for everyone – but neither do medical doctor prescriptions.

Home Remedies

Some have found gin and raisins to be incredibly helpful. A minority of people find that it doesn’t help, but most people seem great benefit, even for those who received no benefit from prescription drugs.

Many medical doctors find this hard to swallow. Many write it off as a placebo effect, but too many incredible recoveries have resulted, stories that haven’t been seen for placebos.

Purple Pectin

Here is another amazing home remedy or arthritis. Certo contains pectin, a natural ingredient found in the cell walls of plants and the skin of vegetables and fruit. It is used as a thickening agent in jams and jellies. Home canners have been using Certo for decades. It can be found in the canning section of most grocery stores next to the Mason jars, lids, and rubber rings.

This home remedy has also been kicking around for a long time and that there are variations on the recipe. Certo in grape juice can also work wonders for arthritis pain also. But of course, there are those who say it is worthless for them. This is often true with drug prescriptions however, sometimes they work, and sometimes there is no benefit, only side effects, and doctors can’t explain why.

By the way, pectin has been shown to lower cholesterol and reduce atherosclerosis in animals. And grape juice can reduce the tendency of blood to clot, which may mean it will prove as effective as wine at preventing heart attacks.
