Understanding how Google works is like learning another language. And just like discovering a new language its easy to learn just enough to get yourself in trouble.

It’s not uncommon for Google to suspend an account and effectively ban that person from future advertising. In many cases they are banned for inappropriate advertising. That is using a variety of dodgy marketing methods including spam and misleading marketing methods.

Just like the old cowboy movies the white hats are the good guys. This white hat advertising is deemed to be within the Google guidelines.

Recently a problem has surfaced where normal white hat accounts are being banned and many of the owners are not sure why. The reason is Google has shifted the rules and hardly anyone is aware of this change.

You may read this article one or more years after it is written, so the exact rules are not important. What matters is that as an internet marketer you must keep up to speed with the changes in your industry which can affect you.

Be on the mailing lists of the big guns in marketing, join some forums and don’t allow yourself to be isolated. When you sit alone in your office running a business it is easy to forget about the world out there and just keep doing the same things.

Remember to look at the other players in the business for advertising such as Yahoo, MSM, Facebook and you tube even though it is still Google owned.

If you keep up to date and do the right thing in your marketing you are unlikely to fall foul of the Google regulations. But it is your responsibility to do the research and in your interest to make the required changes.

As this article was written the new rules mostly affected websites with a squeeze page. Google now requires a logo, a picture of the product you are selling and links on that page to other parts of your website.

This will not suit the standard squeeze page and sales page formula. But it’s up to us to comply and be creative with our marketing within the new guidelines.

Remember the solid basics will always apply. Have a URL that describes your product or service, make sure your spelling is correct and your grammar is reasonable. Write interesting content, this will attract links and use good keywords but don’t overdo it, not only does Google not approve but it doesn’t make sense to the reader.

Your page titles must be descriptive and contain keywords. If you stuff your content and titles with keywords you are in being banned territory. Think about how your site appears and reads from a potential buyer’s perspective. If it’s a little over the top to you, it will be way over the top to them
