Creating a link wheel is a very effective SMM (Social Media Marketing) & SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy that can be used by anyone to improve the rankings of their sites. Essentially, a link wheel leverages the power of highly ranked Web 2.0 sites to build targeted backlinks back to your sites.

Getting links to your own site from 5-10 of these types of sites is very powerful, and forms the basis of the link wheel strategy.

In the traditional (or old) link wheel method, you have 5 web 2.0 websites inter-linked and pointing to your website. In this Link wheel scenario, every Web 2.0 property links to your main site in the middle, as well as to one other Web 2.0 site in the wheel to form a closed loop.

This structure, when drawn on paper looks like a bicycle wheel with your website as the hub, the links pointing at it as the spokes and the inter linked web 2.0 websites as the outer rim of the wheel.

What are backlinks and why are they good for you?

A backlink is a hyperlink that points back to your site. If the hyperlink is properly anchored (the anchor is the text shown for the link), meaning the link is the actual keyword you are trying to rank for, then this is the cream of the crop of backlinks. The more authority a site, where the backlink appears, has in Google the more worth the backlink from it has.

Using link wheels to build quality backlinks

Because most web 2.0 sites are counted as authority sites by Google, links from these sites back to yours is what can really help your search engine marketing – among other things. It doesn’t matter if the link is on a page rank 0 sub domain. What matters more is the actual hyperlink.

What is a web 2.0 site

Web 2.0 sites are sites like Squidoo, HubPages, Blogger, WordPress.com, Wetpaint etc. Sites that allow visitors or members to add their own content. By publishing an article on each of these sites and then using the proper anchor text to link back to your money site, you effectively build quality backlinks.

What not to do when building link wheels

The fastest way to getting your link wheel destroyed is to write crap and then set and forget. Your time is much more valued if you set these sites up to look and read legit. Spend a bit of time and build some links to each link wheel in the chain to make them stronger.

• If you add pictures, video and regular updated content each of your link wheels will become a little authority site by itself over time giving your main site much more strength.

• Google caught on pretty quickly as most of the link wheel structure leaves very clear footprints.
• They are closed networks so are easy to track.
• This makes such Link Wheels a lot less powerful now.
• We need to cancel or hide the footprints.

Google was smart. They soon learned about this through the huge footprints such wheels leave back. Since every web2.0 site is now pointing to your site, it’s easy for Google to trace the footprints. Rankings fall off overnight.

My serious advice is to stay away from building such link wheels. They do work, but not in the long run. Until you are promoting a short term affiliate offer where you need some rankings overnight, for a short period of time, don’t go with this method.
